While most MiM programmes are nearly 2 year courses, 1 year programmes continue to foray into Management education. Some universities offer both the programs such as the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, or the London School of Economics and Political Science; other universities only offer the 1-year program for graduates in business-related areas, for instance, ESADE from Barcelona. A few exceptions such as London Business School offer a 1-year program for non-business graduates.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages and it will only be worthwhile to ask yourselves the following questions before settling for the programme of your choice.

  • Where exactly are you in your career path?
  • What is the reputation of the school you are considering?
  • If you’re already working, can you take a 2 year break for MiM? Will you be able to sustain without an income for 2 years?
  • What is the cost of the programme?

My name is Pietro, and I am an Italian student. I graduated in 2009 from Roma TRE University in Rome, with a major in Law and First Class Honors. After graduation, I moved to London, where I lived, worked and studied for about a year.

My plan was to make up my mind about what master course to take after my undergraduate years, since I have never been interested in pursuing a career in Law. I started to conduct research on universities, business schools and masters in management. My aim was to become marketable for international companies and be more flexible in the job market.

Being in Europe, I had a great choice of programs: business schools in London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Geneva and Milan have been offering masters in management for recent graduates since 15/20 years, and they have been ranked top tier for a long time. But still, after living, studying and working in Italy, UK and Hungary (for a semester abroad during my undergraduate years), and travelling around most parts of Europe, I felt like an experience in the USA would have made my personal and academic background more complete, as well as enhance my career perspective.…
